Rental allowance / Housing benefit
Rental allowance is possible for this studio, because of the new rules regarding housing allowance in 2026. However, there are some personal requirements you must meet in order to be eligible. The following will change for 2026:
1. No more maximum rent limit
From 2026, the maximum rent limit as a requirement for receiving housing allowance will be removed. This means that tenants with higher rents — even in the private sector — may be eligible.
Note: the allowance is calculated based on a fixed portion of the rent, so not always the full amount.
2. Lower age limit for young people
Young people will qualify for full housing allowance sooner. From 2026, this will apply from age 21 instead of 23, making housing allowance more accessible to more young adults.
3. Service costs no longer included
In the new calculation, only the base rent is counted. Service costs — such as cleaning shared areas, lighting in communal spaces, or caretaker fees — will no longer be included.

4. Lower personal contribution
The income-dependent personal contribution — the amount you must always pay yourself — will be lowered. From 2026, this amount decreases by € 7.58 per month.
